I built this game because I grew up on word searches. Before every summer road trip, I'd stop at the gas station and buy a puzzle booklet to get me through the long drive to the beach. Scanning a grid for hidden words made the hours disappear, and it still does.
This version has more than a dozen themes, three difficulty levels, a daily puzzle, and a global leaderboard. Click and drag to highlight a word. That's the whole interface, and it works the same on a phone, a tablet, or a desktop.

How to Play Word Search
Find every word hidden in the grid. Words run horizontally, vertically, diagonally, and sometimes backwards, depending on your difficulty.
- Pick your settings. Theme and difficulty both change the puzzle.
- Read the word list. It sits alongside the grid.
- Scan for first letters. Find where a word starts, then trace its path.
- Drag to select. Click and drag, or tap and drag, across the letters.
- Take a hint if you need one. The hint button reveals the first letter of an unfound word.
- Finish and submit. Find every word, then post your score to the leaderboard.

Tips & Strategies for Finding Words Faster
Want a better time? This is how I play.
- Hunt rare letters first.Q, Z, X, and J stand out in a grid. Spot one and you've usually found a word.
- Watch for common endings. -ING, -TION, and -ED are easy to pick out and lead you back to the full word.
- Sweep the grid in order. Random searching wastes time. Work row by row or column by column.
- Start with the long words.They're easier to spot and clear more of the list.
- Chain your finds. Words found within 10 seconds of each other build a multiplier up to 5x.
- Save hints for last. Hints cost points.
The History of Word Search Puzzles
Norman E. Gibat invented the word search in 1968 in Norman, Oklahoma, as a feature to draw readers to his local classifieds paper, the Selenby Digest. Teachers picked it up almost immediately as a spelling and vocabulary exercise.
By the 1970s, word searches had spread to newspapers and puzzle books worldwide, and they remain one of the most popular puzzle formats today. Digital versions like this one add what print never offered, like leaderboards, themes, and a fresh daily puzzle.
